When Pickett Insurance Agency was started in 1949, agents used carbon paper in order to have a file copy of the insurance applications we wrote, we looked up rates from pages kept in big three ring binders and some of us used adding machines with pull down ”sha-shing” handles to add up all of the premiums being quoted. Back in those days car insurance was not mandated by the State and only about half the people driving in Washington carried it. A big debate arose in the insurance community around 1970 about whether replacement cost policies would cause people to burn down their houses in order to get brand new ones. Those were the time when dinosaurs ruled the earth – insurance companies were unresponsive to customer demands. Little did they know that the old ways of doing business were about to change dramatically!
It started slowly with computers that could rate. Then computers could work faster than the IBM Selectrics we were all using for “word processing”. Suddenly we were managing our agency records with computers, followed by internet access and now Facebook and Twitter. As we were freed by the tremendous potential computers offered, the information needed to write your insurance continues to grow almost “beyond freedom and dignity” - Insurance scores, Clue reports, black box models and the normal blizzard of email clarifications make it oftentimes easier to close a new mortgage than buy an insurance policy.
But amidst all of this turbulence, the insurance professionals at Pickett Insurance continue to bring sanity to the process. We will communicate your concerns to our fine carriers on your behalf.
